The ship, carrying a cargo of sulphuric acid, suffered leakage of acid from cargo to ballast tanks and required assistance approaching the Sri Lanka coast off Trincomalee on 06/04/2009.
The crew abandoned ship.

In recognition of environmental risks to the Sri Lankan waters and coastline, the Sri Lanka Navy towed the listing tanker to deep sea pending salvage investigation.
Granba sank the night of 08/04/2009, 80 nautical miles away from Trinco, while she was towed.
